Concrete work looks simple from the outside. Somebody builds a form, pours gray mud into it, and a few days later there's a slab. What you can't see from the sidewalk is the mix design, the sub-base, the rebar placement, and the timing, and those are the four things that decide whether your driveway is still flat in five years or cracked and heaving by the second winter. What a real quote actually includes
A quote that just says "driveway, 500 sq ft, $X" tells you nothing. Ask for the mix strength. Standard residential concrete runs 3,000 to 3,500 PSI, but this close to the water you want air-entrained concrete at 4,000 PSI, which resists the freeze-thaw cycling and the deicing salt that gets tracked onto every slab from October through March. Air entrainment is a set of microscopic bubbles mixed into the concrete that give the ice somewhere to expand into instead of blowing the surface apart. It costs a little more per yard. Ask what's holding the slab up besides the concrete itself. Wire mesh only works if it's held up on chairs, roughly 2 inches off the sub-base, so it ends up in the middle of the slab where it can actually do something. Ask for proof of license and insurance, and ask how long they've worked on the peninsula specifically, since sand and salt air change how a job gets built compared to an inland town. Ask what PSI and air entrainment they're specifying, what's reinforcing the slab, and how they're handling drainage so water pitches away from the house instead of pooling against the foundation, which matters more here than almost anywhere given how flat most of these lots are and how quickly the storm drains back up in a heavy downpour.
